Mexico Files Criminal Complaints with US Justice Department After 17 Mexicans Die in ICE Custody

Mexico will file criminal complaints with US state and federal prosecutors and with the US Department of Justice over the deaths of at least 17 Mexican nationals in ICE custody or during immigration operations, Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco says.The most recent case involves Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, who was shot by an ICE agent in Houston; ICE says the agent acted in self-defense after alleging Salgado tried to run over an officer, and Mexico says it will press for homicide and human-rights investigations.President Claudia Sheinbaum's government will also pursue civil suits against companies that run detention centers, request precautionary measures from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and ask the Mexican Attorney General's Office to support filings.
