Luigi Mangione Federal Stalking Trial Delayed to January; Jury Selection Starts January 5

A federal judge delays Luigi Mangione’s federal stalking trial to January, with jury selection set to begin January 5 and opening statements scheduled for January 25.The indictment alleges Luigi Mangione crossed state lines and used a cellphone, the internet and interstate travel in the December 4, 2024, killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was shot in Midtown Manhattan while walking to an investor conference.Murder and weapons counts were dismissed in federal court earlier this year, removing the death penalty, but New York state prosecutors still intend to try Luigi Mangione on second‑degree murder and weapons charges in September using evidence such as a 3D‑printed pistol, a notebook and marked ammunition.Judge Margaret Garnett cited the overlap with state proceedings when ordering the delay; potential jurors will complete sealed questionnaires, face follow‑up vetting, and six alternates will be chosen to reduce bias and prepare for possible dismissals during the federal trial.
