Taliban authorities released US academic Dennis Coyle after a year of detention in Kabul following mediation by Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.The 64-year-old linguist was held without charges since January 2025 until the Afghan Supreme Court ruled his time served was sufficient.The release followed family appeals and negotiations involving Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and former US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad.Washington maintains its designation of Afghanistan as a sponsor of wrongful detention while still seeking the release of Mahmood Habibi.
