International Rescue Phase Ends as Death Toll Reaches 3,342 and Government Seeks UNDP Housing Aid

International search-and-rescue teams have ended the international phase and the acting government has asked the United Nations Development Programme for housing assistance after the June 24 earthquakes increased the death toll to 3,342 and the injured count to 16,740.Relief authorities report 17,345 people remain homeless, 856 buildings suffered damage and 190 collapsed, while 86,794 families have received emergency aid including more than 9,585 tons of food and nearly 670,000 liters of potable water.Domestic crews and 29,567 military and security personnel working with 27,482 volunteers say they rescued 6,462 people overall, international teams rescued 14 survivors before withdrawing, and officials warn reconstruction and shelter funding will be required for months.
