Double Earthquakes Strike Venezuela's Northern Coast Killing Hundreds and Displacing Thousands

Two powerful earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 strike Venezuela's northern coast, killing at least 188 people and injuring more than 1,500 as rescuers search in La Guaira, Caracas and Yaracuy. The quakes occur 39 seconds apart along the Boconó fault and form a shallow, complex rupture lasting about 50 seconds that triggers landslides, soil liquefaction and widespread building collapse, forcing thousands from their homes. The US Geological Survey warns of numerous strong aftershocks, including the possibility of further shocks above magnitude 6, which increases risk for search teams and slows debris-clearing operations.Hernando Tavera of the Instituto Geofísico del Perú says the sequence reflects a continuous rupture rather than two isolated tremors, and Venezuela's lack of an early warning system and its political and economic crisis complicate emergency response and sheltering.
