Brazil Ratifies EU-Mercosur Trade Pact to Create Large Trade Zone

Brazil finalized its ratification of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement following a unanimous vote by the Senate in Brasilia. This landmark accord aims to create one of the largest free trade areas in the world by removing tariffs on ninety percent of goods. While Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva championed the deal, Emmanuel Macron continues to lead French opposition due to agricultural concerns. Paraguay remains the only founding member of the South American bloc that has not yet completed its legislative approval. The agreement was signed after twenty-five years of negotiations and represents thirty percent of the global gross domestic product. Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that the EU will proceed with provisional application despite the legal challenges raised by some European lawmakers. Agricultural sectors in South America expect significant growth as the pact facilitates the export of coffee, meat, and soybeans. Environmental standards and pesticide usage remain central points of contention for those opposing the treaty in Europe.Davi Alcolumbre praised the Senate vote as a sign of institutional maturity for the largest economy in Latin America. The pact encompasses over seven hundred million consumers across twenty-seven European states and the Mercosur founding nations. Argentina and Uruguay previously ratified the document, leaving the final step to the Paraguayan parliament. Diplomats expect certain portions of the trade agreement to take effect within a few months as the implementation process begins.Tereza Cristina highlighted that the agreement is essential for navigating a global climate characterized by rising protectionism and fragmentation. Protective measures demanded by France include stricter import controls at ports and adherence to European environmental rules. The treaty is expected to transform economic relations between the two blocs by significantly reducing trade barriers. Both regions now look toward the final parliamentary steps in Asuncion to fully enact the comprehensive economic partnership.
