EU Parliament Backs New Deportation Centers in Non-EU Countries After Controversial Policy Vote

EU lawmakers approved creating deportation centers in non-EU countries to process rejected asylum seekers during a plenary vote.The legislation, supported by the European People's Party and far-right groups, permits detaining individuals for up to twenty-four months.Left-wing parties opposed the measure as a human rights violation while supporters pointed to the low return rate of twenty percent.Negotiations with EU member states will follow the vote which saw 389 members in favor and 206 opposed to the new return rules.
