Firefighters Are Able to Attack Almería Blaze as Burned Area Reaches 6,600 Hectares

Firefighters are now able to attack the wildfire near Almería after conditions improved overnight, allowing crews to move beyond defensive lines and press into ravines and scattered settlements.Regional authorities report about 6,600 hectares have burned, roughly 1,500 people were evacuated and 12 people died while eight were injured, four of them severely; Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska cautions that the majority of the roughly 23 reported missing remain unconfirmed with three formal disappearance reports filed.Officials say the blaze likely began when an abandoned power cable failed near Los Gallardos, and rescue teams including the Military Emergency Unit and local firefighters are working to identify victims, many of whom are foreign residents including British nationals.
