Israeli Forces Kill Two in Southern Lebanon, Breaching Ceasefire as Washington Talks Open

Israeli forces opened fire near Nabatieh al Fawqa and Hadatha, killing two civilians and wounding others while saying they targeted an armed terrorist cell close to their positions. The shootings break a fragile ceasefire that had held since Sunday and coincide with the start of a fifth round of direct Lebanon-Israel talks in Washington aimed at securing a longer truce and addressing withdrawal and disarmament.Hezbollah condemned the strikes as a violation but did not immediately retaliate, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and spokesperson David Mencer say Israeli troops retain authority to neutralize threats and will remain in southern Lebanon. The incidents follow a U.S.-Iran memorandum that set up a de-confliction cell intended to limit regional escalation; the conflict that began in early March has killed thousands, displaced many and left negotiators facing deep gaps over withdrawal and Hezbollah disarmament.
