Trump Faces Estate Objection After 'Hallelujah' Is Performed at Freedom 250 Mall Rally

The Leonard Cohen estate is objecting to the unauthorized use of “Hallelujah” at the Freedom 250 kickoff on the National Mall after Christopher Macchio and Master Gunnery Sgt. Kevin Bennear performed the song before Donald Trump spoke.Several artists, including Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, The Commodores and Young MC, withdrew after the Great American State Fair programming became a Trump-backed Freedom 250 rally, leaving Lee Greenwood, Flo Rida, Vanilla Ice and Alexis Wilkins on the lineup. The estate says it refused permission for the Republican National Committee to use “Hallelujah” at a prior convention in 2020 and notes a broader pattern of musicians and families, including Tom Petty’s family and Neil Young, objecting to unauthorized political uses of their work while the White House has not responded.
