FIFA Suspends Balogun Ban on Probation as Belgium Appeals and UEFA Condemns

Belgium has submitted urgent appeals to FIFA's appeals judge and said it will ask the Court of Arbitration for Sport after FIFA placed Folarin Balogun's one-match suspension on a one-year probationary hold following a call from President Donald Trump to Gianni Infantino.FIFA did not rescind the red card shown after a video assistant referee review of Balogun's tackle on Tarik Muharemović but applied Article 27 to defer the ban, a procedural move officials said would only activate if a similar offence occurs during the probationary period.UEFA, national federations and figures including Jurgen Klopp and Sepp Blatter condemned the decision as damaging to the World Cup's integrity, while United States coach Mauricio Pochettino and some US officials defended the procedural outcome. If the Court of Arbitration for Sport accepts an appeal, the tribunal could produce a binding ruling on how expulsions and external political contact are handled during the World Cup and shape future disciplinary consistency.
