PGA Tour to Split Into Championship and Challenger Series, Boosting Elite Purses to $20M

The PGA Tour board approves a two-tier model beginning in 2028 that creates a 120-player Championship Series of about 15 signature events and a secondary Challenger Series of roughly 20 tournaments.Championship Series events will guarantee $20M purses, eliminate sponsor exemptions and use a 36-hole cut, while Challenger Series events will offer at least $4M, fields near 144 and a promotion and relegation system that advances about 20 players. The plan, developed by the Future Competition Committee chaired by Tiger Woods and presented by CEO Brian Rolapp after Woods's return from treatment following an arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence earlier this year, drew support from John Henry and Theo Epstein and criticism from Rory McIlroy as LIV Golf has faced funding problems after Saudi backers withdrew support.
