Uber Expands Women Preferences Nationwide While Facing California Lawsuit

Uber Technologies Inc. rolls out Women Preferences across the US, letting women riders request or reserve trips with women drivers while enabling women drivers to accept requests from women only. Two California drivers, Andre Almond and Hans Ruud, have filed a class action alleging the policy violates the Unruh Civil Rights Act by discriminating against men and shrinking male drivers’ access to fares, and Uber has moved to compel arbitration. The expansion follows pilots and global use, has logged more than 230 million trips worldwide, and raises questions about limits for nonbinary users, parallel litigation against Lyft Inc., and whether the feature will reliably improve safety or affect driver earnings.
