Moritz De Hadeln Dies After Surgery, Led Berlinale During Fall of the Wall and Built European Film

Moritz de Hadeln dies at 85 in Nyon after complications during surgery, his biographer Christian Jungen confirms and says they remained in contact until the end.He directs the Berlin International Film Festival from 1979 to 2001, opens the Berlinale to East Berlin audiences after the fall of the Berlin Wall and helps establish the European Film Market that links culture and commerce.He also leads the Locarno Festival, becomes the first non-Italian director of the Venice Film Festival in 2002 and 2003, founds Visions du Réel and is succeeded at the Berlinale by Dieter Kosslick.
