Police and Soldiers Deployed After More Than 900 Arrested in Nationwide Anti-Migrant Protests

South African authorities have arrested more than 900 people and deployed thousands of police officers and soldiers nationwide to contain a wave of anti-migrant protests.Officials say 120 marches took place, of which 108 were peaceful and 12 turned violent across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Free State.At least four people have died in incidents linked to the unrest while thousands of migrants fled their homes and more than 12K Malawian and Zimbabwean nationals were repatriated days before the marches.President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the violence, Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili provided arrest figures, and groups such as Amnesty International South Africa and Human Rights Watch urged prosecutions for incitement and protections for migrants.
