Health System Teeters as Death Toll Rises to 1,719, 38 Hospitals Damaged and Outbreaks Threaten

The World Health Organization and aid groups say Venezuela's health system is collapsing as the official death toll has risen to 1,719 and 38 hospitals have been damaged, including three closures and six partially functioning facilities.Christian Lindmeier of the World Health Organization reports that assessments of 21 hospitals in Caracas, La Guaira, Miranda and Falcon reveal extreme overcrowding, surgical backlogs and biosafety failures while interim President Delcy Rodriguez confirms the extent of hospital damage.Low vaccination coverage, ruptured water and sanitation networks and mass displacement increase the risk of measles, diphtheria and pertussis, and vector-borne and waterborne diseases such as yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya, Zika, Oropouche virus and malaria, and aid agencies are calling for immediate medical and sanitation support.
