The Berlin Regional Court has sentenced Johannes M. to life imprisonment for 15 counts of murder, ordered preventive detention and imposed a lifetime ban on practicing medicine as prosecutors expand their probe into further deaths.The court found that between 2021 and 2024 Johannes M. administered lethal mixes of anesthetics and muscle relaxants to twelve women and three men, victims aged between 25 and 94, causing rapid respiratory paralysis and death.The conviction follows a year-long trial of 58 days with testimony from more than 200 witnesses and 22 experts, a late confession in which Johannes M. admitted to 12 counts and an apology to victims' families, and exhumations prompted by fires set to conceal killings.Prosecutors are investigating 76 additional suspected cases, have exhumed at least one body abroad and say further charges are expected this year as authorities continue to review hundreds of patient records.
