LineShine at Shenzhen Tops TOP500, Achieves 2.198 Exaflops with CPU‑Only Design, After El Capitan

LineShine at the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen achieves 2.198 exaflops on the High Performance Linpack and now leads the TOP500, displacing El Capitan to second place. The system runs on a CPU-only architecture built with Chinese technologies including the LingKun compute platform, the LingQi interconnect and the Kylin operating system, and it consumes about 42.2 megawatts. The announcement at the ISC Conference in Hamburg marks the first time since 2017 that a Chinese machine tops the TOP500 and leaves four US systems among the top five alongside Germany’s JUPITER Booster.Analysts say the breakthrough shows continued Chinese progress despite US export controls and have urged policymakers to consider whether restrictions should be extended to CPU technologies that now power LineShine.
