Justice Department Demands States Prove They Block Noncitizen Voting as It Seeks Voter Rolls

The Justice Department sends letters to election officials in all 50 states demanding proof that they prevent noncitizen voting and giving five days to respond with compliance plans.Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon warns that officers who knowingly retain noncitizens on voter lists or facilitate noncitizen voting could face criminal prosecution as the department seeks unredacted voter rolls it plans to share with the Department of Homeland Security. The action follows repeated claims by Donald Trump and his push for the SAVE America Act, has drawn criticism from Adrian Fontes and Deidre Henderson who call the letters intimidation, and increases federal-state tensions ahead of the midterm elections.
