China and India Cut Coal Usage During Record Capacity Growth

China and India reduced coal consumption last year for the first time since 1973 while simultaneously expanding their power plant capacity.Researchers Robbie Andrew and Lauri Myllyvirta explained that China proposed 161 gigawatts of new projects to avoid repeats of past power shortages.Although India plans to add 100 gigawatts of coal power by 2033, experts believe China reached its peak usage in 2025 due to rapid green energy growth.
