The New Zealand Mountain Guides Association confirmed one of the deceased climbers on Aoraki was a member of their organization and an internationally renowned mountain guide, while the other was the guide's client. Two of the climbers’ companions were rescued unharmed by helicopter after authorities responded promptly to a distress call received late Monday night local time. Over 240 deaths have been recorded in the national park containing Mount Cook since the start of the 20th century, with many climbers never recovered.
