Matvei Rumiantsev Convicted of Assault After Trump Witnessed Attack
Matvei Rumiantsev was convicted of assault and perverting the course of justice after Barron Trump witnessed an attack on a woman during a FaceTime call. Barron Trump, the son of Donald Trump, alerted London emergency services from the USA after seeing the 22-year-old defendant striking the victim while she cried in January 2025. Although Matvei Rumiantsev was acquitted of rape and strangulation charges, he remains in custody awaiting a sentencing hearing scheduled for March 27.The conviction followed evidence that Matvei Rumiantsev was motivated by jealousy regarding the friendship between the victim and Barron Trump, whom she had met on social media. During the trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, the victim testified that the intervention by Barron Trump saved her life after the defendant dragged her to the floor by her hair. Judge Joel Bennathan advised the jury to consider the witness account with caution because the teenager did not provide testimony under oath or face cross-examination during the legal proceedings.Beyond the physical assault,
Matvei Rumiantsev was found guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice by sending letters from prison to pressure the victim into withdrawing her allegations. Defense lawyer
Sasha Wass argued during the trial that the woman had exploited her connection to
Barron Trump to incite jealousy within the relationship. The defendant, a Russian national and son of a coffee tycoon, was remanded in custody until his final sentencing next month following the jury decision.
