Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of rebellion for his failed December 2024 martial law decree.Judge Ji Gwi-yeon ruled that the sixty-five-year-old leader attempted an illegal insurrection to seize power by deploying military forces against democratic institutions.Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun received thirty years while former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo was sentenced to twenty-three years for assisting the coup attempt. The court also sentenced the former president’s wife Kim Keon Hee to twenty months for bribery as Yoon Suk Yeol remains the first leader since Chun Doo-hwan to receive such a penalty.
