Mexico Earthquake Interrupts Presidential Press Briefing

#Cuauhtemoc, #Mexico
Two people died after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck southwestern and central Mexico on Friday morning. Claudia Sheinbaum was forced to suspend her first press briefing of 2026 at the National Palace as buildings swayed and residents evacuated across the capital. Authorities recorded over 500 aftershocks following the tremor that caused landslides on major highways in Guerrero but triggered no tsunami threat.Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that essential services remained functional after the evacuation as Clara Brugada reported one fatality in Mexico City. Evelyn Salgado stated that while no deaths occurred initially in Guerrero, communication lines were disrupted in several regions following the seismic activity. The event reminded residents of the high seismic risk in the region while the USGS and NOAA confirmed that the deep tremor posed no danger of a tsunami.
