Storm Goretti Strikes UK and Northern France, Causing Mass Outages
A powerful winter storm named Storm Goretti struck parts of the United Kingdom and northern France, bringing life-threatening winds, heavy snow in Scotland and major travel disruption after forecasters issued rare red warnings for southwestern England.National Grid said more than 57,000 customers were without electricity across southwestern England, the Midlands and Wales, while Enedis reported about 380,000 homes blacked out in northwestern France, mostly in Normandy, and regional train services were suspended.Emergency services and thousands of technicians were mobilized, schools and ports closed, and authorities urged residents to stay home after extreme gusts—up to 213 kph on the French coast and 159 kph in the Isles of Scilly—caused fallen trees, blocked roads and water outages.
