Umaro Sissoco Embaló was deposed by a military coup following controversial election results, with opposition leader Fernando Dias da Costa and several officials also targeted as the military suspended state institutions and appointed General Horta N'Tam as transitional leader.Embaló, after his arrest and escape, fled to Senegal and then the Republic of Congo, while Dias da Costa sought and received asylum at the Nigerian embassy, confirmed by Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar.ECOWAS, led by Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, suspended Guinea-Bissau, and the junta's legitimacy is disputed, with PAIGC headquarters occupied and Domingos Pereira arrested.
