Benjamin Netanyahu advised Israelis abroad to avoid large Hanukkah gatherings after a mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney that left 16 people dead and 29 injured and that authorities say was carried out by a father and son, the elder about 50 and the younger about 24, with the elder shot and killed by police and the younger hospitalized in critical condition. The attack has prompted stepped-up security and guarded public menorah lightings from Sydney to New York, Berlin and London as Jewish leaders and civic officials, including Hersh Goldberg-Polin and Kiama Potts, called for stronger protective legislation and international coordination to protect religious events.Russia’s Berel Lazar cancelled Hanukkah celebrations in Moscow for the first time since the Soviet Union collapsed, and authorities and news organizations, including Reuters and EFE, say investigations are continuing and that police have not publicly released suspects' names or motive.
