Green Party wins Baden-Wuerttemberg election as state leaders quit

The Green Party secured a victory in the Baden-Wuerttemberg state election with Cem Oezdemir poised to become the first state leader with a migration background.Rival party leaders Andreas Stoch and Hans-Ulrich Ruelke resigned after the Social Democratic Party and Free Democratic Party suffered major defeats.The Alternative for Germany secured 18 percent of the regional vote while also leading the first round of a district administrator race in Brandenburg.Outgoing leader Winfried Kretschmann will end his tenure as the Christian Democratic Union narrowly failed to overtake the Greens for the top position.
