Alan Jamieson Films First Sleeper Shark in Frigid Antarctic Waters
Researchers from the Minderoo-University of Western Australia captured the first-ever footage of a sleeper shark in the Antarctic Ocean.Alan Jamieson and Peter Kyne confirmed the 4-meter-long predator was filmed at a depth of 490 meters near the South Shetland Islands in January 2025.This discovery in 1.27-degree water challenges assumptions that sharks could not survive in the frigid, stratified environment of the Antarctic Peninsula.
