Updated: Saturday
The Department of Education asked roughly 250 staff who had been fired from the Office for Civil Rights to return temporarily to help reduce a backlog of more than 25,000 school discrimination complaints. The department says the caseload rose from about 20,000 during Donald Trump's presidency after staffing cuts that reduced OCR from roughly 4,100 employees to about 2,000 and shuttered several regional divisions.Julie Hartman said the recall does not amount to permanent reinstatement and the department will continue appealing lawsuits while using recalled staff to clear the backlog.
