A group of 43 global scientists has urgently called for governments to regulate ultraprocessed foods (UPFs), describing them as a driving factor behind a "pandemic of chronic disease" including cancer, type 2 diabetes, depression, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic kidney disease. Their findings reveal that UPFs account for over half of the typical British diet and are linked to significant health risks such as a 25% increased likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes and a 23% increase in depression. Experts recommend stricter regulations including mandatory warning labels on UPFs, subsidies for fresh foods for low-income families, and restricting UPFs in public institutions despite resistance from food corporations using lobbying tactics reminiscent of the tobacco industry.
