New Mexico Probes 1970s Forced Sterilization of Native Women

New Mexico is launching an investigation into the forced sterilization of Native American women by the Indian Health Service during the 1970s.The state Indian Affairs Department and the Commission on the Status of Women will report findings by 2027, following similar efforts in Vermont and California.Survivors such as Jean Whitehorse are calling for a formal apology from the USA after a 1976 Government Accountability Office audit revealed that thousands were sterilized without proper consent.
