The IAEA confirmed two drone strikes near Chernobyl damaged containment systems around Unit 4 but reported no immediate radiation leaks and said monitoring systems remained in place. The "New Safe Confinement", built in 2019 at a cost of about €1.5 billion, suffered a 15-square-meter hole in its dome, internal insulation fires and a drone engine landing in the crane maintenance garage while firefighters cut access holes and poured water into frozen insulation.IAEA Director‑General Rafael Mariano Grossi called for rapid restoration and said inspectors found the protective shelter from 2010–2019, which cost about 17 billion kronor, had lost primary safety functions after a February strike that damaged its roof, and Volodymyr Zelensky described the damage as “significant” as experts warned further attacks could release radioactive dust from Unit 4.
