Following Tanzania's October 29 presidential election, President Samia Suluhu Hassan claimed victory with around 98% of the vote amid criticism for unfairness and exclusion of main rivals. Police and armed patrols opened fire on largely unarmed protesters in cities including Dar es Salaam and Mwanza, with videos and satellite imagery confirming dozens or possibly hundreds of deaths. Authorities responded with curfews and a nationwide internet blackout, while the UN Human Rights Office and Human Rights Watch estimated hundreds killed and many more injured or detained.
