Senators protested the government’s tightened pension rules as the Senate prepared to debate a late, wide-ranging €3.5 billion budget amendment introduced earlier this week. The amendment cuts months redeemable for university degrees and raises early-retirement thresholds, prompting Francesco Boccia to report anguished messages from people who already paid thousands of euros to buy back years and warning the changes could add up to 30 months to retirement by 2035.Claudio Borghi said the League will file sub-amendments and other coalition senators voiced embarrassment, but the government pressed on as the dispute over pensions, bridge funding and procurement rulings risks delaying the final vote until Christmas Eve.
