The Gabna Sami village officially ended its collaboration with LKAB on mining at the Per Geijer deposit, a site north of Kiruna containing approximately 735 million tons of iron ore and over 1.3 million tons of rare earth metals.Lars-Marcus Kuhmunen, chairman of the Gabna Sami village, stated "We say a flat no to mining" and warned the proposed mining would end their Sami village without real influence and veto rights. The EU has classified Per Geijer as strategic under its critical raw materials rules, pressuring further development despite LKAB’s doubts about profitability and concerns over negative impacts on reindeer migration routes and Sami culture.
