Prakazrel "Pras" Michel, the Grammy-winning rapper and founding member of the Fugees, was sentenced to 14 years in prison in Washington, D.C. for his role in a billion-dollar Malaysia scandal involving illegal foreign funds in American politics. Michel was convicted on multiple counts including conspiracy, money laundering, and acting as an unregistered agent of foreign governments for funneling over $120 million from Malaysian billionaire Jho Low into the 2012 reelection campaign of President Barack Obama. His defense attorney plans to appeal the sentence, which was below the recommended maximum, while Michel was also ordered to pay nearly $65 million in restitution to the US government.
