Myanmar Frees Over 6,000 Prisoners for Independence Day
Hundreds of detainees leave Yangon prisons after the Myanmar junta announced an amnesty for over 6,000 people to mark 78 years of independence.Former information minister Ye Htut was among those released, though democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi remains incarcerated following the 2021 coup. The mass release comes amid international criticism of a rigged election and a civil war that has seen more than 22,000 people detained.
