Rescuers Search for Missing Skiers After California Avalanche

Search and rescue crews are hunting for 9 missing backcountry skiers after a massive avalanche struck near Soda Springs during a powerful winter storm.Following the evacuation of 6 survivors, responders from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and CAL FIRE are battling blizzard conditions and 30 inches of fresh snow.The group of 16 individuals was participating in a three-day excursion led by Blackbird Mountain Guides when the D2.5 magnitude slide occurred near Castle Peak on Tuesday.Steve Reynaud from the Sierra Avalanche Center and resident Kurt Gensheimer have questioned the safety protocols as operations continue in hazardous terrain northwest of Lake Tahoe.
