SpaceX says the Starlink 35956 satellite likely suffered a small onboard explosion, vented its propulsion tank, dropped about 4 kilometers in orbit and released trackable debris after the company had earlier reported losing control of the vehicle. The satellite remains largely intact and is tumbling in an orbit well below the
ISS, is expected to reenter and burn up within weeks, and
SpaceX is working with
NASA and the
US Space Force to monitor debris while
Leo Labs and other trackers report tens of fragments and point to an internal energetic source amid growing congestion in low Earth orbit.
