Juan Pablo Guanipa and Perkins Rocha Freed as Amnesty Law Looms
Juan Pablo Guanipa and Perkins Rocha were released from custody on Sunday as the Venezuelan government prepares to pass a general amnesty law proposed by acting President Delcy Rodríguez. The releases follow the capture of Nicolás Maduro by the USA on January 3 and a recent visit by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk to discuss a roadmap for reconciliation. While opposition leader María Corina Machado celebrated the freedom of her allies, human rights groups demand the release of the remaining 687 political prisoners documented in the country.
