Giant Tortoises Return to Floreana Island After 180 Years
158 captive-bred giant tortoises have been released onto Floreana Island in the Galápagos for the first time since the 1840s.Jen Jones of the Galápagos Conservation Trust leads the effort to re-establish the native Chelonoidis niger niger species as part of a massive ecological restoration project.This milestone follows nearly two centuries of extinction for the species on the island and serves as a global model for island conservation.
