US District Judge
Cameron McGowan Currie dismissed criminal indictments against
James Comey and
Letitia James, ruling that charges brought by
Lindsey Halligan were invalid due to her unlawful appointment as acting US Attorney.
Judge Currie stated Halligan’s appointment and prosecutorial actions were void, but left open the possibility for new charges, although the statute of limitations blocks further prosecution of Comey. This case emerged amid political pressure from
Donald Trump and efforts by the DOJ to defend Halligan and plan an appeal.
