JetBlue Flight 1112 from
Curaçao to
New York narrowly avoided a midair collision with a US Air Force refueling tanker that crossed its path without an active transponder near Venezuelan airspace, forcing the crew to halt their climb while passengers remained unaware of the danger. Recordings from regional air traffic control captured the
JetBlue pilot and a controller condemning the tanker’s conduct as outrageous and warning of a surge of unidentified military aircraft in the Caribbean skies, as the civilian jet reported that the other plane passed within only a few miles at the same altitude.
JetBlue spokesperson
Derek Dombrowski said the incident has been reported to federal authorities and is under review by the Federal Aviation Administration amid heightened US military operations, drug interdiction efforts, and security warnings regarding Venezuelan airspace, while the
Pentagon and the US Air Force declined immediate comment and the airline praised the crew’s training and response.
