Approximately 40 people died in a Swiss bar fire during New Year celebrations as hospitals across California welcomed the first infants of 2026.In San Jose, Barishma Asem and Devajit Asem celebrated the birth of Wangthoi Asem at Good Samaritan Hospital while Marlowe Hatchett delivered a daughter in Redwood City.These arrivals followed the birth of Benjamin Kelland, who became Boston's first baby of the year at Massachusetts General Hospital just after midnight.
