The Trump administration announced more than $10 billion in U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, following earlier U.S. notifications that described an approximately $11 billion, eight-part package to the island. The State Department detailed eight proposed sales that include 82 HIMARS, 420 ATACMS missiles, 60 M109A7 howitzers, drones, military software, Javelin and TOW missiles, helicopter parts and Harpoon refurbishment kits, and said the transfers support Taiwan's modernization and U.S. security interests.Taiwan welcomed the assistance as it raises defense spending toward 3.3 percent of GDP next year and a goal of 5 percent by 2030, while Beijing sharply condemned the move and analysts warned it could further raise tensions in the region.
