Lei Lei and Xiao Xiao, the only giant pandas at Ueno Zoo and offspring of Shin Shin, will be returned to China at the end of January and their last day on display will be January 25, after which China, which retains ownership of loaned pandas and any offspring, will repatriate them to its facilities.The move comes as Tokyo has pressed Beijing to allow the pandas to remain and submitted a formal request to borrow a new pair that has not received a reply, and Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said pandas have long been beloved in Japan even as diplomatic tensions with China have intensified following comments by Sanae Takaichi and security incidents noted by Shinjiro Koizumi.
