A statue of Barbara Rose Johns was installed in the U.S. Capitol to replace a statue of Robert E. Lee, following plans to honor the teenager who led a 1951 student strike against segregated school conditions. The bronze work by
Steven Weitzman, created in his Mount Rainier studio and examined by Johns’ family, shows her holding a tattered book and bears an inscription quoting Isaiah and Johns as officials including
Mike Johnson,
Hakeem Jeffries and
Glenn Youngkin attended the unveiling.
